Books aren’t heavy, but reading builds muscles

Reading skills in Indiana students have been declining for many years with a sharp drop during the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year, the state heard wonderful news last year; the results of the 2024-25 third grade IREAD scores showed their largest ever increase — up 5% to an overall pass rate of 87%. Reading scores returned to pre-pandemic levels (equal to 2018-19), a welcome improvement after legal changes focused educators on the science of reading to support young readers. IREAD scores improved for the 2025-26 year by a smaller amount, with under 89% of third graders passing the exam.

ISSMA Finals For High School Bands Set For Nov. 7

The 53rd Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) state finals for high school marching bands will be Nov. 7 in Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis. ISSMA recognized Paige’s Music as the presenting sponsor of this event. Supporting sponsors include Band Shoppe, Music Travel Consultants, SBN Broadcasting Networks, and Silent Command. In addition, American Dairy Association Indiana and Prairie Farms Dairy will award a $1,000 “Winners Drink Milk” Scholarship to a music student at each of the four state champion schools, according to a provided news release.

IPEC executive director highlights risk of state takeover of IPS if voters reject tax measure

At IPEC’s Thursday meeting, its last before Election Day on Nov. 3, Executive Director Karega Rausch reminded the board that “there are serious consequences if the referendum is not successful.”He pointed to IPS Superintendent Aleesia Johnson’s comments that the potential fallout of the referendum failing includes the insolvency and state takeover of Indianapolis Public Schools. “Having the state take over our local public education system is not a good idea for our children, our families, or for our communities,” said board member Patricia Castañeda. Since IPEC formed earlier this year, passing the referendum has been its primary priority. But the board is beginning to look ahead to future meetings, in which more details will be shared about its budget and plans for a unified transportation system, facilities, and accountability. The seven local high school marching bands that qualified for the Indiana State School Music Association's state finals have learned will they will perform on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Lucas Oil Field in Indianapolis. Bands are divided by school enrollment size, with the biggest schools in Class A and the smallest in Class D, with those in between in classes B and C. Here is the schedule for the Evansville-area high school marching bands. All times are Eastern.
