Emporia’s FY25 budget review: school funding, public hearing set
The Emporia City Council once again reviewed its funding for Greensville County public schools at its budget review session held on Tuesday. The meeting began with a motion to set funding for GCPS. At the city’s budget workshop on April 23, the council decided to allocate the same amount as the previous year — $4.2 million, despite GCPS requesting an additional $2 million in this year’s budget. With a $1.3 million state tax for education, Emporia’s share of GCPS’ funding would be $5,610,581.
Two arrested after three-county chase
An armed carjacking that began in Oak City last Saturday evening ended abruptly after a high speed chase through Bertie and Hertford counties. Emporia’s dark day: a lynching lost to history
One hundred and twenty-four years ago, Emporia orchestrated its first and only lynching. The event during which two men — one Black and one white — were hanged was unique to a small town facing a perceived threat, according to Ed Conner, a local man who had been determined to uncover the circumstances surrounding the fatal day. Conner presented the results of his research to the Emporia Rotary Club on Tuesday alongside his historical novel, “Cotton and O’Grady,” a fictional retelling based on the real event. Conner’s tale is told from the perspective of a third man involved in the crime spree who was always theorized but never confirmed.
