Dot Ave. Bridge demolition will start this weekend – expect MBTA service changes

The nearly 100-year-old bridge on Dorchester Avenue connecting motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians between Dorchester and South Boston will be demolished over the next three weekends: March 23-24, March 30-31, and April 6-7 – per the MBTA.

Construction began in the summer of 2022 to prepare for the full bridge replacement by summer 2024. However, thanks to construction scheduling conflicts and utility work, the closure will extend through the fall of 2024.

Located between Von Hillern and Kemp Streets, this bridge carries vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists over the Red Line, the Commuter Rail Old Colony Lines, and the Cabot Yard maintenance tracks.

The project aims to replace the aging bridge, originally constructed in 1925 and last rehabilitated in 1975, with a new structure. The replacement is scheduled to begin in spring 2024, with an estimated cost of $34.5 million, marking the most extensive repair effort on the bridge to date. The demolition of the bridge will affect Red Line service with shuttle bus replacements plus Commuter rail service.
