A police chase in connection with a retail theft ended in a deadly crash on Route 322, killing three people and shutting down a portion of the highway for hours in Boothwyn.

The crash happened at around 2 p.m. Wednesday on Route 322 near Chichester Avenue when the driver of a red Ford Taurus lost control and crashed.

Witnesses say the incident started a few minutes earlier as Pennsylvania State Police were chasing the vehicle down the highway, pursuing suspects from a reported theft at a Lululemon store in Concord Township, according to the Inquirer.

The driver was going around 110 miles per hour along Route 322, according to police radio.

Reports say seven people were inside of the car.

The pursuit ended when the driver lost control of the car and crashed, trapping the people inside the car, before it caught on fire, according to the Inquirer.

Witnesses said first responders on the scene tried to rescue the people inside and put out the fire, but three people from inside the car died at the scene.

Two people were seriously injured and airlifted out from the scene, according to reports.

Route 322 has since reopened.

The crash is still under investigation, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
