Pride flag draws mixed reviews in Southport
As Pride Month is celebrated this month, the Southport selectboard is receiving both positive and negative remarks about the Gay Pride banner hanging near the municipal building. During the June 5 board meeting, selectmen read two correspondences from citizens regarding the town’s participation. Selectmen read resident Bob Cronk’s response to their decision to hang a Pride banner outside the town hall for June and enact a municipal proclamation supporting Pride Month. Cronk disagrees with the board’s decision. On June 6, Selectman Gerry Gamage reported Cronk wrote he didn’t think it was appropriate for a governmental agency to take a public stand on a controversial issue.

Farewell Address by Jordan Chamness, valedictorian
Hello everyone, my name is Jordan Chamness and I am beyond grateful to be up here speaking to you all today as the Class of 2024 valedictorian. I am grateful for all of the people who have helped me to get to this point in my life and I am grateful to you all, friends and family, for being here with us today. Mimi and Geezer back there! But, this also includes the family that I have up here on this stage with me. Some of us have known each other basically since birth, and some of us only just met two years ago! Regardless, one of the strengths of our class that many people don't know is how connected we all really are! Of course, this comes hand in hand with being such a small school, but it's also because there's never going to be another us. As families do, we've all been making promises to each other over the years, ranging from saving a seat, to even marriage pacts! So, as a parting gift to you all, I have a few promises to make.
BRHS Class of 2024 car parade
Members of Boothbay Region High School’s (BRHS) Class of 2024 are no strangers to car parades. Having graduated middle school in a COVID year, the car parade arose as students had to find ways to celebrate the milestone while maintaining social distancing protocols. On Friday, June 7, students once again loaded into decorated vehicles, vintage autos, buses and fire trucks and took to the streets of Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor. This time, the parade followed their high school commencement. And they were free to celebrate unmasked.

Well done, Wormfest!
The Wormfest group has hit on something. The founders picked an apt spot for the worm-digging theme, on the waterfront, and successfully walked the line of both honoring a serious and special piece of Wiscasset’s heritage and having fun off the theme, too, in creative events and more. Decades ago, who would have thought Wiscasset’s worm industry would inspire the 2024 middle school band to play the “Star Spangled Banner” on Railroad Avenue and families to put on hip waders and carry teammates who were the designated worms?
