Happy Memorial Day, all. We begin Illinois Week by celebrating this holiday, by honoring those that fought, that paid the ultimate sacrifice for this country. To paraphrase President Kennedy, a nation reveals itself not only by the people it produces, but by the people it remembers. To those OTE readers who served, we thank you. To those who lost friends, loved ones, family, we join you in mourning and honoring your heroes. And today, we remember the 189 individuals named on each of the limestone columns that line the exterior of Memorial Stadium in Champaign.

When I walked into Padano’s Pizza — after first passing the two stone lions out front, I walked into the epitome of a small-town restaurant: a quaint dining room with an ordering counter run by the owner in front of a handwritten chalkboard menu and fired-up ovens. That corner brick building has been serving pizza (and so much more) since 1998, and it’s long been a favorite among locals, in particular St. Joe high school students.

Almost two years ago, Illinois State University administrator Adam Peck was hit by a bicycle. Four days later, he died of his injuries.
