Bluffton man arrested, charged with raping minor

BLUFFTON, S.C. (WSAV) — The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Bluffton man on Friday, charging him with raping a child.

Deputies arrested Carmelo Romero Catalan, 61, and booked him into the Beaufort County Detention Center. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office told News 3, the assault happened between August 2018 and May 2019.

At first, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office was leading the investigation, but turned it over to Beaufort County, after finding out the alleged crime happened out of their jurisdiction.

BCSO deputies first learned about the incident on Jan. 31, 2024. As of Monday, Catalan is still at the Beaufort County Detention Center.
