    Sports Recap: Blaine, Anoka head to true team state; Pettis throws no-hitter

    The Blaine boys and girls track and field teams made it a clean sweep at the Section 5AAA true team meet, the Anoka boys won the Section 4AAA title, and the Totino-Grace boys won the Section 4AA meet to advance to the state true team competition May 17-18.

    True team competition awards scores to every entrant to measure overall team strength and depth.

    Leading the way for the Blaine boys with individual wins during the Section 5AAA meet at Forest Lake May 7 were River Santiago in the 1,600 and 3,200; Evan Koerber in the 800; the 4x100 relay team of Zachary Larson, Samuel Shaughnessy, Michael Olomiyete and Michael Douglas; the 4x200 relay team of Edward Mills, Shaughnessy, Haevian Cole and Jamareon Douglas; the 4x800 relay team of Nathan Taylor, Connor Bialka, Jack Zellmer and Evan Koerber; Prince Daye in the long jump; and Gerald Ferguson in the triple jump.

    Pacing the Blaine girls with individual wins were Hope Dweh in the 200; the 4x100 relay team of Aliyah Adepoju, Jordan Blair, Tayalekay Borh and Grace Kowhegba; the 4x200 relay team of Dweh, Hannah Claussen, Kowhegba and Katelyn Wozniak; and the 4x400 relay team. The Spring Lake Park girls won five events, with Ellyana Prairie sweeping the 100 and 300 hurdles; Brianna Finnegan winning the 100; Tiffanie Huynh winning the pole vault; and Arabella Sutch winning the shot put.

    The Anoka boys were led to the team title in the Section 4AAA meet at Elk River May 7 by individual wins from Afanna Ibekwe in the 110 hurdles and Isaiah Salami in the high jump. The Coon Rapids boys won five events, with KhiJohnn Cummings-Coleman winning the 100 and the 200, Sam Dennis sweeping the shot put and discus, and a win by the 4x200 relay. Andover’s Shae Wyszynski took first in the boys 300 hurdles.

    In the girls competition, Andover’s Avah Shaw won the high jump and Payton McKnight won the 300 hurdles, and Coon Rapids’ Nyebol Jock won the 100 hurdles.

    The Totino-Grace boys advanced to the true team state meet by winning the Section 4AA title at Fridley May 7. Event-winners for the Eagles included Justin Koharski in the 100 and 200; Matthew Lindgren in the 1,600; Isaac Meyer in the 3,200; Xavier Case in the pole vault; and the 4x400 relay. Fridley’s Lorenzo Hampton III won the 110 hurdles and the 300 hurdles; Tykeilan Hy Shaw-Moore won the long jump; and Isaiah Watson won the triple jump.

    In the girls meet, Totino-Grace’s Denitsa Zaharieva won the 400, and Camille Friden won the 3,200.

    Baseball

    Ethan Pettis delivered a no-hit gem as Blaine shut out Maple Grove 3-0 May 9, striking out 11 batters. Pettis also picked up a pair of hits at the plate, and Carson Timm doubled and drove in two. The Bengals followed with a 7-6 win in nine innings over Osseo May 10. Carter Amelse had three hits, Pettis drove in three, Wilson Guse scored three runs, and Ryan Burley earned the win with three innings of no-hit relief.

    Keaton Coe went 3-for-3 as Andover topped Blaine 5-2 May 14 to improve to 12-4. Drew Law had two hits and two RBIs, Anthony Pardo added a pair of hits, and Wyatt Myers allowed just one earned run over 5 1/3 innings.

    Jackson Provoncha had three hits and knocked in two, and Parker Nedland allowed just two earned runs over 6 1/3 innings as Anoka topped Centennial 7-6 May 13. Evan Freking also picked up a pair of hits and two RBIs, and Logen Jaeger added two hits.

    Coon Rapids notched a pair of one-run wins, topping Spring Lake Park 3-2 May 9, and Maple Grove 7-6 May 14. Totino-Grace improved to 8-7 with a 5-1 win over SLP May 14.

    St. Francis made it four wins in a row with 10 runs or more in each outing with wins of 13-2 over Mound Westonka May 8, 10-0 over North Branch May 10, and 14-6 over Becker May 14. Cooper Fiskewold and Chase Patton combined on a one-hitter against North Branch, with Owen Lamson driving in four.

    Legacy Christian topped West Lutheran 7-6 May 9, and North Lakes 11-6 May 13.

    PACT earned a 10-2 win over Sciences and Agriculture May 13.

    Park Center/Columbia Heights/Maranatha earned a 13-2 win against Fridley May 13 to improve to 10-5.

    Softball

    Andover finished tied for first atop the Northwest Suburban Conference with Champlin Park, with the two teams posting 10-2 NWSC records, and Rogers at 9-2 with one conference game remaining. The Huskies earned an 8-3 win against Rogers May 9, powered by Morgan Kostecka with three hits, and Kaelyn Polzin with three RBIs at the plate and 10 strikeouts pitching. Blaine topped Andover 3-1 May 14 to improve to 13-6 behind a two-hitter by Emmie Sylvia-Cochran. Emily Vogel homered and drove in all three Bengal runs.

    Spring Lake Park shut out Totino-Grace 13-0 May 14 to close with a 9-3 NWSC mark.

    Emerson Markas and Molly Hanson both homered, Kara Schwintek collected three hits and three RBIs, and Sydney Borchert threw a one-hitter as St. Francis shut out Becker 11-0 May 14 to improve to 13-4.

    PACT stretched its winning streak to six by defeating Breck 6-4 May 8, Blake 19-1 May 13, and North Lakes 12-0 May 14. Ella Ling and Brynn Shimek each had three hits against Blake, while June Tessum, Abby Gerhard and Megan Henry all scored three runs.

    Anoka recorded a pair of wins, topping St. Michael-Albertville 2-1 May 10, and Rocori 8-6 May 13.

    Coon Rapids rolled past Breck 16-1 May 13.

    Fridley-Heights edged Minneapolis Edison 8-7 May 13.

    Legacy Christian defeated Blake 16-6 May 10, and Sciences and Agriculture 22-3 May 13.

    Section tournaments begin May 20.

    Boys tennis

    Spring Lake Park topped St. Paul Como Park 6-1 in the first round of the Section 4AA team tournament May 13, and was scheduled to face top-seeded Mahtomedi in the quarterfinals May 15. Columbia Heights fell 7-0 to Irondale in the first round.

    Coon Rapids shut out Park Center 7-0 in the first round of the Section 5AA team tournament May 14, advancing to play third-seeded Maple Grove in the quarterfinals May 15.

    Blaine earned the second seed in Section 7AA, and a bye into the quarterfinals May 21. Andover earned the No. 7 seed, Anoka the eighth seed and St. Francis the 12th seed.

    Totino-Grace earned the fifth seed and Fridley earned the sixth seed in Section 6A.

    Boys lacrosse

    Robert Cruikshank buried seven goals and Steven Axelrod recorded six goals and five assists to fuel an 18-7 win for Blaine over Totino-Grace May 13. Mark Radtke added two goals, Alex Crane had a goal and four assists, and goalie Rylan Dickenson had 14 saves.

    Andover scored 11 first-half goals as it eased to a 15-4 win over TrlMAC May 13, improving to 7-2 on the year. Cole Jensen tallied four goals, Kaleb Weikel had three goals and four assists, and Andrew Evans and Jordan Giacomini had two goals apiece.

    A balanced attack spurred Anoka to a 23-4 rout over Osseo/Park Center 23-4 May 13. Josh Ryther scored four goals, with three apiece by Charlie Hendrickson, Ethan Massmann and Ben Iverson, and two each by Cooper Bakke, JD Jones, Brady Roof and Dylan Thinnes. Goalie Nate Thompson made 10 saves.

    Girls lacrosse

    Grace Schmidt collected eight goals, Olivia Lohrke and Sophie Shimabukuro scored three goals apiece, and Jane Romaker made 12 saves as Spring Lake Park earned a 15-4 win against Anoka May 8. Leah Amsler had a goal and an assist for the Tornadoes.

    Totino-Grace/St. Anthony Village earned a 17-10 win against Blaine May 13, led by Layla Jackson with six goals, Krista Munsinger with four goals, and Grace Kruse, Victoria Ashland and Cece Wefel with two apiece. Cierra Ledeen scored five goals and Hope Moore scored three for the Bengals.

    Columbia Heights topped Minneapolis 11-10 May 13.

    Osseo/Park Center defeated Coon Rapids 13-6 May 13, with Katie Wigen scoring three goals for Coon Rapids.

    Boys golf

    Legacy Christian Academy won the MCAA conference championship May 14. Braylon Ylkanen, Elijah Wade, Trevor Zenk and Ty Nelson earned All-Conference honors, and Tanner McNamee and Miles Greer earned All-Conference Honorable Mention.

    Totino-Grace finished as the runner-up in the NWSC meet at Loggers Trail May 14. Spring Lake Park earned fourth, Anoka and Blaine tied for fifth, Andover earned 11th and Coon Rapids earned 13th. T-G’s Peyton Savageau earned fifth individually, and T-G’s Collin Ramos and Charlie Givens tied for sixth. Tying for 10th were Anoka’s Tyler Gandrud and Jack Schmitz, Spring Lake Park’s Jake Birdwell and Chase Birdwell, and Blaine’s Tyler Buffo.

    The NWSC meet is May 21.

    Girls golf

    Legacy Christian Academy won the MCAA conference championship May 14. Raquelle Nelson, Bri Brandt, Emily Brandt and Hailey Nelson earned All-Conference honors, and Gabby Otteson earned All-Conference Honorable Mention.

    The NWSC meet is May 23.

    Adapted softball

    Anoka-Hennepin qualified for the PI adapted softball state tournament, to be held May 17-18 in Chanhassen.
