GRASSY BUTTE, ND ( KXNET ) — A man was taken to Bismarck Thursday to receive treatment after a high-speed chase on Highway 85 and a stand-off in a stock pond with a knife and hammer.

The McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office reports the United States Forest Service called for assistance with a “suspicious” male attempting to sell items on the Little Missouri National Grasslands at 11:49 a.m., on April 25.

Upon contact, the man fled in his vehicle and drove south on Highway 85 from 6th Street Northwest, in Grassy Butte. Officers followed and, after a 100+ miles per hour chase, the man’s vehicle crashed into a ditch north of 10th Street Southwest in Billings County.

After entering the ditch, the man exited the vehicle and produced a knife and hammer to law enforcement. After unsuccessful attempts to apprehend the man with what authorities called “less lethal weapons,” he fled the scene and traveled one mile before being located in a stock pond, still armed with the knife and hammer.

Officers continued to attempt to negotiate for a peaceful surrender for over 90 minutes. Authorities said the man “inflicted self-harm” while in the stock pond before finally exiting the water. After refusing to drop the weapons, the man was apprehended after “less lethal weapons” were again used and a K9 was deployed.

The man was treated for his injuries by law enforcement and emergency medical personnel on the scene before being flown to Bismarck for treatment.

While an investigation is still ongoing, McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office will be pursuing charges for the male due to this incident.
