Blue wave reshapes Cumberland and North Carolina | Opinion
The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners will have two new members after the elections and may see a shift in the balance of power. That was one of my takeaways from a midterm race Nov. 3 that saw a shift toward Democrats at every level of government, including here in Cumberland County. Charles Evans, a former commissioner's chairman, was the top vote-getter in the at-large race Tuesday , earning 34% of the vote, according to unofficial results. Current Vice Chair Veronica B. Jones placed second and won reelection with 32%. They were trailed by Greg West, a longtime school board member, with 20% and Ron Ross, with 15%. Election night, I asked Evans on WIDU radio's Election Central why he decided to run again. He said it is because of projects discussed by the board while he served, which are stalled or going nowhere. He cited the shelter for the unhoused, for which current commissioners have reopened a search for a new location; and the Crown Event Center, a project under construction that the board killed in 2025 — after having torn out the free, longtime, parking lot in front of the county courthouse.
