Disaster recovery centers opening for those affected by August storms

Three disaster recovery centers are opening to help residents in seven Ohio counties designated for federal disaster assistance due to severe August weather that brought widespread flooding, tornadoes and significant property damage. President Donald Trump and the Federal Emergency Management Agency last week approved federal major disaster assistance for Franklin, Licking, Clermont, Hamilton, Morgan, Muskingum, and Perry counties. Preliminary damage assessments from multiple rounds of heavy rain, flooding and 17 confirmed tornadoes statewide between Aug. 10 and 13 found that at least 50 homes and businesses were destroyed, 806 had major damage, and 475 had minor damage, according to a press release from Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine's office. Homeowners and renters who were affected by the storms can visit the three disaster recovery centers operated by the state and federal Emergency Management Agencies serving the seven counties to learn about available assistance. The centers and the counties they will serve are at the following locations: Reynoldsburg Community Church, 1636 Graham Road, Reynoldsburg. Residents, businesses and communities recovering from August flooding and severe storms in the region are now eligible for federal assistance after President Donald Trump approved Ohio's major disaster declaration Oct. 2. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine requested the declaration on Sept. 2. Many residents in Muskingum, Morgan and Perry County communities, like Crooksville, Roseville, and Corning, were ravaged by extreme thunderstorms, severe flooding and the aftershock of a derecho from the Midwest between Aug. 10-23. "After weeks of working with the governor, FEMA and local officials, I'm grateful President Trump approved Ohio's major disaster declaration," Congressman Troy Balderson said in an email. "This federal assistance will help families, businesses and communities across Ohio begin rebuilding after these devastating storms." The August flooding was part of a broader weather disaster that injured numerous people, left about 300,000 Ohioans without power and damaged or destroyed hundreds of homes and businesses. ‘Because we love Vinton County’: The flooding aftermath and response in photos

MCARTHUR, Ohio — A week after Gov. Mike DeWine visited Vinton County and declared a state of emergency, things are slowly returning to normal. By Sept. 24, state Route 32 and U.S. 50 reopened, restoring one of Vinton County’s connections to the outside world. While the floodwaters are gone, evidence of them can be found throughout the county. Dust and silt coats many of the roads and low-lying areas, the dried remnants of a torrent of muddy water that swept through with devastating consequences. Things in downtown McArthur have returned to normal life, but traveling further from downtown reveals the destruction. Debris chokes many of the rivers and streams throughout the area. This includes not only felled trees, but also the remnants of trailers, buildings, homes and vehicles swept away by floodwaters. Most stores and other buildings have reopened, but a handful of unlucky ones submerged in floodwaters remain closed. Two buildings particularly hard hit by flooding are the Renovate Life Church of God, located at 64698 Infirmary Road, and Xena Place Apartments, located at 420 S.
