BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Participants from across the Southern Tier walked in support of heart health on Sunday.

The American Heart Association hosted its 35th Southern Tier Heart Walk at Binghamton University. Around 750 walkers joined the organization for the event, raising $375,000 for its lifesaving efforts.

Over the past 35 years, the Southern Tier Heart Walk has raised over $5 million for treatment, educational training, and advocacy programs. This year also marks the 100th birthday of the American Heart Association. For 100 years the Association has saved and improved lives, pioneered scientific discovery, and advocated for healthy communities.

“Every walker who joins and every dollar donated mean more lives saved,” said Dr. Edmund Sabanegh, Southern Tier Heart Walk chairperson and President and CEO at The Guthrie Clinic. “They mean more research. More people trained in CPR. More medical breakthroughs. And more lifesaving moments for hearts big and small. Thank you to everyone involved in the Heart Walk for supporting the lifesaving mission of the American Heart Association.”

In addition to the walk, walkers participated in activities including CPR demonstrations, heart health information sessions, celebrations of heart disease and stroke survivors, and entertainment.

The funds raised from the Southern Tier Heart Walk go towards research, advocacy, CPR training, and more. Donations can be made to the Heart Walk until May 28. To donate click here .
