BINGHAMTON, NY (WIVT/WBGH) – Today is Arbor Day, and to celebrate, the Binghamton Garden Club planted a tree along the Greenway.

Arbor Day is a holiday that celebrates the planting and preservation of trees.

The Binghamton Garden Club planted a fast growing, native Tulip Tree near the intersection of Vestal Ave and Ivanhoe Road along the Greenway which connects Binghamton University to downtown.

The sapling is protected by a tube so wildlife can’t disturb the tree as it grows.

The second vice president of the club, Frank Kirk says he frequently walks along the Greenway, and has been eyeing up this location for a while now.

“It can get up to 90 feet tall, given enough time to grow. It has beautiful tulip shaped flowers in the Springtime, but it needs to be 15 to 20 years old to do that. It’s a relative of the Magnolia Tree that you see all around town,” says Kirk.

Binghamton Garden Club maintains the gardens at the main kiosk in Otsiningo Park as well as a butterfly garden at the far end of the park.

He says the group is always looking for more volunteers.

They meet on Thursdays at 1 p.m. at the United Methodist Church across from SUNY Broome.
