BIG STONE GAP, Va. (WJHL) — A man was sentenced on Tuesday for a 2022 shooting in downtown Big Stone Gap, Virginia.

Shane Christopher Martin, 32, of Richmond, was sentenced in the Wise County Circuit Court after he previously pleaded guilty on Jan. 19, 2024, to one count of the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and one count of aggravated malicious wounding, the Commonwealth Attorney said in a release.

Martin was sentenced to a total of 23 years with nine years suspended and will serve an active sentence of 14 years in prison, the release stated.

On Nov. 27, 2022, Martin shot at and wounded an individual in the parking lot of the former Economy Drug Pharmacy in Big Stone Gap. Martin then fled the scene and was later arrested at a local restaurant where he worked.

“We are pleased with the outcome of today’s sentencing in the reckless shooting by a local resident who put the citizens of Big Stone Gap at risk,” Assistant Commonwealth Attorney Corey Salyers said in a release. “This careless act by the defendant put not only the victim but multiple other individuals in harm’s way. We are thankful that no additional people were injured in this senseless crime. This type of behavior is not and will not be tolerated in Wise County.”

As of Wednesday, Martin is being held in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail System as he awaits placement by the Department of Corrections.
