The Red Sand Project is part of the nationwide awareness program. The decision to move the festival came after Wagoner's newly elected Mayor Dalton Self made the executive decision to discontinue funding the event, citing financial concerns. The festival reportedly incurred a total loss of $240,208.78 over the years, although The Pryor Information Publication (The PiP) was unable to substantiate this figure.
