Fatal Crash in Knox County, IL: One Dead, Multiple Injured in Two-Vehicle Crash
Knox County, IL – A tragic collision involving two vehicles in Knox County claimed the life of one individual and injured several others on Friday afternoon. The Knox County Sheriff’s Office reports that the incident took place at the junction of Knox Highway 4 and Knox Highway 15 around 2:14 p.m. Friday. A red 1994 Pontiac, driven by a 41-year-old man from Toulon ran a stop sign while heading north on Knox Highway 15. Subsequently, a white 2004 Chevrolet truck, moving west on Knox Highway 4, collided with the passenger side of the Pontiac. This impact forced both vehicles off the road to the north.
United School District Names New Superintendent
In a special board meeting on Thursday February 29th, the United CUSD 304 Board of Education approved the hiring of Mr. Tom Hawkins to be their next Superintendent. Hawkins will officially begin his duties as superintendent on July 1, 2024 and is under contract through the 2025-2026 school year. Hawkins will replace Mr. Jeff Whitsitt who is retiring at the end of the current school year.

One Person Treated for Smoke Inhalation and Two Pets Lost in Downtown Galesburg Fire
On February 19th, the Galesburg Fire Department battled a formidable blaze at 149 East Main Street. This structure, home to both businesses and residences, saw significant damage, and emergency demolition of part of the third floor was required. Downtown Galesburg witnessed the heart-wrenching loss of two beloved pets to this inferno, although no human casualties were reported. The City Manager lauded the Fire Department for their quick and decisive response. Fire Department personnel have identified the room of origin on the third floor of the building. The third floor of the building has one apartment and a large open space. Three people were in the third-floor apartment at the time of the fire, and they were all able to evacuate before the fire department arrived. One person sought treatment at the hospital for smoke inhalation. The tenants from the apartments on the second floor evacuated safely from the building as well.

Galesburg Library Closed For A Month
Folks in Galesburg are going to have to check-out books online for the next month or so. The city’s library closed yesterday. The library will stay closed until April as crews move into a new building. Galesburg’s library has been on East Simmons Street for 60 years, but starting next month it will be on Main Street. Library managers say the new building will have more space, and allow the library to do more. Any books or other things that were checked-out in February aren’t due back until the library reopens in April.
