Two injured in crash on Route 37 south of Salem
Two people were injured in a two-vehicle crash on Route 37 at Church Road south of Salem early Thursday afternoon. Preliminary information from State Police indicates a pickup truck was coming to a stop in traffic on Route 37. For unknown reasons, another pickup struck the first truck in the rear. The impact caused the truck that was struck to leave the right side of the roadway and strike a fence.
Man Arrested after Deputies Find Fentanyl at Franklin County Traffic Stop
WHITTINGTON – A Franklin County man is facing drug charges following a traffic stop Wednesday afternoon on I-57 near Illinois 154 in Whittington. Franklin County Sheriff Kyle Bacon says 21-year-old Nathaniel R. Sloan of Benton is charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance – a Class 3 felony – and Possession with the Intent to Manufacture/Deliver a Controlled Substance – a Class X felony. He is lodged in the Franklin County Jail. Sheriff Bacon says additional charges are pending.

SC 16u Into Gulf Coast World Series Championship After Thursday Wins
The South Central 16u Storm Chasers are into the Gulf Coast World Series after a pair of wins yesterday. SC opened the day with a dominant pitching performance by Salem’s Cody Beard in a 2-1 win over Punching Tickets. He went 6.1 innings allowing just 2 hits and no earned runs. Kaden Milleville got the final 2 outs. At the plate, Colton Shelton drove in both Salem runs. Brody Collier added a single.
Greater Salem Area Foundation to host Annual Swim Event Sunday
The Greater Salem Area Foundation will host its annual swim event from three to five Sunday afternoon at the Salem Family Aquatic Center. Admittance includes refreshments. A foundation official says the event is made possible by major sponsors that include Modern Woodmen, City of Salem, Farm Fresh Market in Salem, Pepsi MidAmerica, and United Medical Response.
Police Beat for Wednesday, July 24th, 2024
Salem Police have arrested 65-year-old Jerry Russell of Glenwood Acres in Salem for violation of an order of protection and criminal trespass to property. Police say they were initially alerted Russell was in Bryan Memorial Park where he had earlier been banned. They later learned he was within 500 feet of a person with an order of protection against him. Russell was gone by the time police arrived, but he was arrested a short time later in a traffic stop. He was taken to the Marion County Jail to await a final decision on charges.
Resurfacing work to begin on portions of Kell and North College in Salem on Monday
The City of Salem has announced the resurfacing of portions of Kell Street and North College Street will get underway on Monday. Kell Street will be improved from Route 37 to 332 West Kell near the bridge just east of South College Street. North College will receive an overlay from Boone to Broughton Street behind Salem Township Hospital.
John Thad Glass, 82, of Florissant, MO (formerly of McLeansboro)
John Thad Glass departed this life on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, having reached the age of 82 years. John was born in Marion, Indiana on July 29, 1941, son of John Ambrose Glass and Ada Douglas Dial. On August 7, 1976, he was united in marriage to Judy Glock in Washington Park, Illinois and two sons came to bless the union.

Fairfield Glade Hosting TN Womens Open
Stonehenge Golf Course in Fairfield Glade hosting the state’s best amateur and professional golfers at the Tennessee Women’s Open Championship through Saturday. One of the longest running women’s open in the country, the Tennessee Women’s Open Championship returns to Cumberland County for the 16th straight year. Tennessee Golf Association Director of Marketing and Communications Josh Shelton said more than 110 golfers will participate.

Melba S. LaFever, 81, of Belle Rive, Illinois, passed away at 3:20 pm July 23, 2024 at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mount Vernon. She was born August 2, 1942 in Mount Vernon, Illinois to the late John D. Breeze and Mary (Bundy) Maxey. Melba married Charles A. LaFever on October 27, 1961.
