I-676 closed for hours after driver strikes man walking across highway
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- All westbound lanes of I-676 in Philadelphia have reopened after a major crash that shut down that side of the highway early Wednesday morning, according to the city and police.Pennsylvania State Police said they were dispatched to the scene just after 4 a.m. The agency said that when troopers arrived, they found a vehicle that was stuck in the left lane and a man lying on the right shoulder of the highway.Police said the man began walking from the right shoulder into the left lane of the highway when he was struck by the driver. The driver remained at the scene and gave a statement to police.The man who was struck has not been identified. He was pronounced dead on the scene by medics and was taken to the Philadelphia Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.The crash investigation closed all westbound lanes of the highway at the Broad Street exit up to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway exit and led to traffic backups.Traffic on the eastbound side was not impacted.
