City officials move to increase fines following unpermitted road closures
We Energies blocked off a portion of east-bound traffic on West Lincoln Avenue on Wednesday, July 29, without city approval, according to Ald. JoCasta Zamarripa, who held a press conference that same day to announce a push for stricter rules on notifying communities ahead of planned road and utility work. At the Wednesday press conference, at Milwaukee's garbage drop-off and city tow lot, Zamarripa, of District 8, stated that the closure and lack of notice to residents was "not only unacceptable, it's unlawful," and frustrating for residents who are experiencing an "intense construction season." Initially, the utility company agreed to close east-bound travel to relocate gas main lines, with the work set to begin on Thursday, July 30. However, the work began a day early with no notice to residents, local business owners or city officials, according to Zamarripa. We Energies has neglected to notify residents of similar road projects in the past, Zamarripa said. Most recently, in June 2026, the company failed to notify residents and business owners of utility road work on West National Avenue and South 16th Street. The company received a $250 fine from the Department of Public Works for each of the two days of

We should build a better transportation system for Milwaukee | Letter
I was stuck inside due to the hazardous air from this year’s Canadian wildfires that are exacerbated by climate change. During that time, I was reflecting on Milwaukee’s contribution to the climate crisis through our dependence on cars. Recent Journal Sentinel coverage only solidifies my conviction: the parking pains during Summerfest, the mayor’s concerns about removing portions of Interstate 794 , proposals to reduce the Milwaukee County Transit System by 25%, and years of construction just to add a few more lanes to Interstate 94. Milwaukee does not have a broad, reliable public transit system, so I can’t really blame anyone for driving everywhere; I drive a car, too. But the transportation sector is one of the top three sources of greenhouse gas emissions in this country, and switching to electric vehicles won’t address the rise in pedestrian deaths, unsafe driving and the widening distance between us in an already isolated world. This city desperately needs real planning and resource allocation to build and improve our public transportation infrastructure. Public transit has been proven to reduce transportation related emissions. It can strengthen communities by creating jobs, connecting neighborhoods and creating equitable opportunities for all Milwaukeeans. Climate change is not slowing

Crash-Cursed Walker’s Point Roundabout Faces $1.8 Million Overhaul Showdown
After years of spinouts, skid marks and confused drivers, Milwaukee officials are finally closing in on a fix for the Walker’s Point roundabout at South Sixth, West Florida and West Virginia streets. The question on the table is simple but not cheap: shrink the roundabout into a tighter, more forgiving circle, or rip it out and go back to a traditional traffic signal. Either way, the city is looking at an estimated $1.8 million job.
