RALEIGH COUNTY, WV (WVNS) — The Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office warned the community about scams after getting reports of scam calls.

The Raleigh County Sheriff’s office received reports that scammers are calling members of the community and pretending to be from the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office.

The scam calls claim that scammers call and leave messages for people claiming that there is an urgent legal matter and are asking for money using sources such as bitcoin for crimes such as failure to appear for jury duty.

To make their attempts appear valid, the scammers learned the names of deputies with the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office and are also spoofing the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office’s phone number.

According to the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office, they do not collect money or fines from the community. Anyone who receives a phone call from someone claiming to be a member of the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office and asking for payment should immediately hang up without giving out information.

Those who believe that the call could be real can call the Raleigh County Sheriff’s office at 304-255-9300, or go to the Raleigh County Sheriff’s Office law enforcement headquarters located at 308 Ned Payne Drive in Beckley.
