Aaliyah Gutierrez 1st Team All Jayhawk
Liberal, Kansas – After wrapping up the 2024 season this past weekend in the Region VI Tournament, the Seward County Lady Saints softball team saw three of their players named to the All-Conference teams led by Aaliyah Gutierrez who was named to the First Team while Raeana Ortiz and Anberlin O’Dell were placed on the Second Team.
Ryan Mein is Hay Rice and Associates Athlete of the Week
Liberal senior golfer Ryan Mein is this week’s Hay Rice and Associates Athlete of the Week. Mein shot a 78 at Willow Tree on Tuesday for a 4th place finish. Mein finishes as a first team all WAC player for the first time since Cameron Riley in 2019. Mein also played basketball and is involved in the All are Welcome Club. Mein has made state each of his past three years in high school. He and the Redskins compete at their 6A regional at Derby on Monday.
USD 480 Approves Training Programs
The USD 480 Board of Education met on Monday evening at 6:30 pm at East Campus and approved the subscription with Crisis Prevention Institute for use of their professional development program “Reframing Behavior” for 2024-2025. Cost of the program is $18,000.00. The Board also approved the training for USD 480 staff members to receive Crisis Prevention Institute’s Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training to be able to train staff in Emergency Safety Interventions. The cost of this training is $13,047.00.
Auditions for Rainbow Players “Willy Wonka” This Week
Rainbow Players has announced auditions for their Summer Musical, “Willy Wonka.” Auditions will take place on Thursday May 9th, Friday May 10th at 6:30 pm, and Saturday May the 11th at 2:30 pm, in the Rapid Fit Showcase Theater at Seward County Community College. Auditions are for those 8 years of age and older. Please prepare a 16 bar, 30-45 seconds, of the song of your choice. Performance dates for Willy Wonka will be Thursday July 11th, Friday July 12th, and Saturday July 13th with the possibility of a matinee on Sunday July 14th. For more information, call 620-655-5934.
Cameron Cartwright KJCCC Player of the Week
Liberal, Kansas – After leading the Seward County Saints to a 4-1 record this past week with a series win over Pratt to wrap up the regular season, sophomore Cameron Cartwright was named the KJCCC West Player of the Week for the second time in the 2024 season as the Saints wrap up their regular season with three of the last four player of the week honors.

Brooks Kappelmann Wins Jester Award
Liberal High School senior J. Brooks Kappelmann won a Jester Award Sunday afternoon at Century II Performing Arts Center’ in Wichita. Kappelmann won the award for Outstanding Cameo Peformer in the Wizard of Oz. Brooks played the role of the guard. LHS was nominated for six Jester awards from this fall’s Wizard of Oz musical at LHS.
