North Carolina is getting a taste of the Lone Star State. Texas-based Buc-ee’s, already building one store in the state, is now eyeing a second location along Interstate 95. The travel center could join Texas-inspired restaurants setting up shop in the Raleigh area. From a barbecue joint to a beloved burger chain, here are openings The News & Observer has covered this year: Buc-ee’s could build a second North Carolina travel center near I-95 and Halifax Road in Rocky Mount. Its first NC location is already under construction off I-85/40 in Alamance County, and there’s no official opening date. East of Texas , a Texas-style barbecue restaurant from owner Claire Calvin, opened at Durham’s American Tobacco Campus . The restaurant serves brisket, burnt ends, pork belly and housemade sausage. Voters return Corprew, Nelson, Ward; approve ABC store, mixed drinks

All three Republican county commissioners whose seats were on the ballot won new terms Tuesday, according to unofficial results. Tim Corprew led the field with 2,326 votes, or 52% of the 4,452 votes cast. Wallace Nelson received 1,104 votes (25%), and James Ward received 1,022 (23%). Corprew collected 1,474 of his votes during early voting, which ran from Oct. 15 to Oct. 31. Nelson received 746 early votes, and Ward received 642. In other races, Sheriff Shelby White was reelected without opposition to another four-year term. White ran as a Democrat in 2018, when he defeated Republican Jim Bray, and again in 2022. He has since switched parties and ran as a Republican on Tuesday. Clerk of Superior Court Todd Tilley also ran unopposed for another four-year term. Tilley ran unopposed as a Democrat in 2018 and 2022 before running as a Republican this year. Voters also overwhelmingly approved two local referendums. The first authorizes the county to establish an ABC board and operate an ABC store. The Town of Hertford already has both. The measure passed 4,250 to 1,200. The second allows the sale of mixed drinks, or liquor by the drink, at restaurants, private clubs and other qualified

Beans & Brews pulls out all the stops to benefit Meals on Wheels

Dark and stormy skies greeted guests arriving at Rocky Mount Mills for the 11th Annual Beans & Brews fundraiser benefiting Meals on Wheels of Rocky Mount. But unlike the fun, the rain didn’t last. As the weather cleared Thursday evening, supporters packed the Power House and spilled into the courtyard, enjoying chili, craft beer and live music while helping raise funds for an organization that serves some of the community’s more vulnerable residents. For Meals on Wheels of Rocky Mount, the annual fundraiser is much more than a social gathering. It is an opportunity to support a growing mission. The organization currently serves 105 seniors through 15 delivery routes and delivered approximately 42,000 meals during the past year. Demand continues to rise, with the agency now receiving more than 20 calls each week from seniors seeking assistance. Inside the Power House, the aroma of simmering spices, smoked meats and secret family recipes filled the air as guests sampled entries from 17 competing chili teams representing local businesses, churches and community organizations. Friendly competition was on full display as teams such as Holy Smokes, Steam & Spice, Wall Street Heat, Bean Counters, Tall Pines Chili Squad and Black N Blue Q

Native Fine Diner's Michelin designation puts Greenville on the food map

The recent Michelin Dining Guide recommendation has Native Fine Diner and its owner, Luke Owens, paying even closer attention to details. Owens was in Nashville, Tennessee, last week to be recognized for his restaurant’s prestigious recommended status in the Michelin Guide American South, one of only 58 listings from North Carolina. The honor came after a year of surreptitious visits from anonymous inspectors who graded the restaurant based on a host of characteristics, including the quality of the ingredients, the mastery of flavor and cooking techniques, the ability to see the chef’s personality come through the food and the value of the meal. It marks the first time a Greenville restaurant has been named to the Michelin Guide, which was originally developed by the tire company as a way to give people guidance on where to travel and where to eat when they travel. The designation goes a long way toward establishing the city as a place with good dining experiences and it opens up the possibility that more Greenville-area restaurants may be included in future editions of the annual guide, Owens said. Gay said Wednesday afternoon that, in fact, someone was going to be coming in from Virginia the next day after seeing her postings on social media. Gay has The Well Fed Cheetah, which offers boxed lunches and offers sandwiches, candied jalapeno pimento cheese, chicken bacon ranch dips, pasta salads and desserts. The Well Fed Cheetah began serving customers July 13 and had an official opening ceremony Wednesday afternoon.
