Harper Creek hurler Wolfersberger holds off Lakeview to win All-City baseball title

BATTLE CREEK — This was the game he was waiting to pitch in all season: the city championship, against his school’s rival.

And Harper Creek’s Tyler Wolfersberger didn’t disappoint.

Wolfersberger came up with a dominant pitching performance as Harper Creek defeated Lakeview, 4-1, in the finals of the All-City baseball tournament at Bailey Park on Saturday.

“This is amazing. Coming into this year, we had our mind set on winning this. And beating Lakeview to do it, makes it special,” Wolfersberger said.

Needing only 66 pitches, Wolfersberger earned the complete-game victory, allowing only three hits over seven innings with seven strikeouts and no earned runs.

“He has been doing a great job for us all year. We were saving him for a game like this, 100%,” Harper Creek coach Jason Miller said.

In a classic pitchers' duel, scoring was limited with Harper Creek scratching together just enough runs off Lakeview starter Jake Kucharczyk, scoring two in the third inning and one in the fifth to lead 3-0. The two teams traded runs in the seventh.

Harper Creek earned the city title after Lakeview had won the crown the last two seasons.

“This is one of the goals the boys had from the beginning of the year,” Miller said. “This was the cleanest we have played all season. Got the hits when we needed to, got the outs when we needed to.

“This is one of the ones we wanted. Boys had good energy all game. From first pitch to the last pitch, they were ready to go.”
