A celebration was held for Jefferson Davis County Library Supervisor Jackie Miller for her retirement. Friends, family and patrons assisted in the reception at the Dr. Frank L. Leggett Public Library in Bassfield on March 28.

Ellen Carraway for provided the refreshments.

“Thank you to the staff of South Mississippi Regional Libraries, Friends of the Library, the SMRL Board of Trustees, Bassfield Mayor Angie Speights Ladner, and everyone in attendance,” said Miller.

Miller also thanked her family for being a source of support to her throughout the years.

Miller became a librarian in Jefferson Davis County in 2002 serving the Prentiss Public Library and the Dr. Frank L. Leggett Public Library.

The opportunity to work close to home and make a difference in the community is what led Miller to have the desire the work for the library system.

“If you worked for me I had one strong rule, every child that walks in the door is greeted with a smile,” she said.

Miller’s most enjoyable part of her job was helping patrons whether it was if someone needed help on the computer, information, or just wanting the best book to read. She also says she enjoyed visiting the children at school and doing the winter and summer reading programs. “I truly wanted to make a difference in each child’s life.”

Miller always participated in whatever events were happening at the library from waterslides to crafts.

“We had so many good times over the years, but the memory that I tell most of the time was when I called the police and they showed up in the garbage truck,” she said. “We all had to multitask!”

Miller says she has made many dear friends over the years. “I learned that 99.9 percent of the time, if you treat people with kindness, they will respect you and treat you well,” she said.

Miller gave a heartfelt thank you to everyone for the kind words, cards and gifts at the conclusion of the celebration.

“This was truly a special day for me that I will always cherish.”
