Western Salisbury Volunteer Fire Company firefighters practice search and rescue techniques at the Allentown Fire Department's training academy tower, along Vultee Street, at the Salisbury department's regular Monday evening drill night Nov. 20. Using an adult-size rescue mannequin, firefighters descended into the darkened lower level of the training tower with self-contained breathing tanks to search for downed victims. The lower level is arranged and furnished as a simulated residence. At any residential fire, the first unit on scene sends interior trained and qualified firefighters into the structure, when it is safe to do so, to search for anyone who may be trapped or incapacitated inside. “This gives our younger firefighters hands-on training in the safety of a controlled environment,” WSVFC Chief Joshua Wells said.
