The SS United States Preservation Foundation Inc. and its co-founder, Steven R. The foundation filed suit Nov. 3 and an emergency motion for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction Nov. 4 in the Northern District of Florida. Okaloosa County plans to tow the 990-foot ocean liner from Mobile , Alabama, on Nov. 9 and sink it Nov. 12 approximately 22 nautical miles southwest of Destin and 29 miles from Pensacola. The plan is to sink the vessel to create the world's largest artificial reef . Developer gets OK to rewrite OLF 8 master plan, despite residents' concerns

Escambia County commissioners unanimously approved a series of major land-use and zoning changes for the OLF 8 property in Beulah on Nov. 5, clearing another significant hurdle for a controversial development that has divided residents over its departure from the county's original vision for the property. The 5-0 votes included changing the property's future land-use designation to mixed-use urban, adopting a new master plan and design code proposed by Tri-W Development and Catalyst, and approving related zoning changes for the massive development now being marketed as Outlying Fields. The decisions represent a major victory for developer Chad Henderson and his partners, who have argued that the original master plan developed by DPZ CoDesign needed to be revised to reflect market conditions and make the project financially feasible. But the changes have drawn sustained opposition from residents who fear the county is abandoning its original promise to use the former Navy airfield primarily to attract high-paying jobs, while replacing a carefully designed walkable community with more conventional residential development. The developers are under contract to purchase approximately 370 acres of the original 540-acre property for about $28.4 million, while the county retains approximately 170 acres for economic development and job creation.
