Fresh Look: Akron Art Museum Unveils $12.5 Million Renovation
After the completion of a $12.5 million upgrade, the Akron Art Museum opened its renovated 1899 Building on Sept. 23. The building was originally Akron’s first post office. “We did a full renovation of infrastructure, as well as adding additional gallery space, so there’s officially more art,” says Alexandra Vukoder, chief advancement and communications officer. It creates over 2,150 square feet of space plus a new 957-square-foot classroom. Also explore the new J.M. Smucker Co. Idea Machine gallery, which is an immersive space with interactive artworks, as well as a black box gallery for video, digital and time-based art. “In addition to opening the three exhibitions in the 1899 building, we also have three new exhibitions on view in our collection galleries and traveling exhibition galleries, as well as some new loans on view,” Vukoder says.
