Calder Allen is a name you need to keep in mind this spring. The Austin, TX native turned heads in 2022 with his debut album The Game , and he kept that momentum going all last year, landing high profile opening gigs and honing his craft behind the scenes. Now, after releasing a few singles in the second half of 2023, and a couple more earlier this year, the fruits of Allen's labor are evident in the release of his brand new sophomore record
Dreamers Drifters and Hiders . Comprised of 11 tracks, Allen's new album showcases his deft lyrical ability and creativity in an often ominous manner as he delves into an array of topics that are all tied together through a common thread of existentialism, mulling over the world and society as we know it and his place within it all. An avid outdoorsman, whose affinity for the natural world and the wealths with which it provides us shines through in each track, Allen once again proves wise beyond his year, exuding a mentality that calls upon the listener to leave the earth a better place than we found it. Boasting an even bigger sound than in his impressive debut project, Allen proves his sonic versatility in each well placed tune on this record. Produced by Charlie Sexton, an old family friend of Allen's who worked on his first album as well,
Dreamers, Drifters and Hiders shows that Allen has what it takes to be one of the artists carrying on Texas' songwriting tradition for the next generation. Here's a few early favorites: "Floating Shoes" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAiE0ScBaJg "No Rush To Fly" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQwXyhMRHdo "Dreamers Drifters and Hiders" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qkb6bu8nL-o "Leave It All Behind" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p23rPxXVcXA For anyone who may not be familiar with Calder, the young artist is a fifth-generation Texan, whose grandfather, Terry Allen, is a legendary Texan songwriter in his own right, best known for his track "Amarillo Highway." Heavily influenced by family and his home state, Allen is also an avid fly fisherman and outdoorsman, and both passions shine in his music through his methodical approach to songwriting and his reverence for the natural world that is so prominent in his lyricism. If you like what you've heard thus far from Calder Allen's forthcoming record
Dreamers, Drifters and Hiders , be sure to catch him live if he's playing in a city near you. As I mentioned before, he'll be on tour with some pretty awesome bands, too...
