Council OKs stipend increase in 2027, budget hit $8.6K
The Owatonna City Council approved an increase to the city’s elected officials’ stipends beginning next year at Tuesday’s council meeting. Councilors Dan Boeke and Don McCann voted against the proposed ordinance. The Owatonna City Council at Tuesday’s meeting voted to increase elected officials’ stipends beginning January 2027. The state requires any changes to elected officials’ stipends to become effective following the next General Election. The last change was effective Jan. 1, 2023, Human Resources Director Rachel Boss said. Tuesday’s meeting saw a second and final reading of the ordinance. Council approved the first reading of the proposal during the Oct. 6 meeting by another 5-2 vote. Beginning Fiscal Year 2027, the budget impact will be $8,600.52. “This is a tough thing to do at any time. We have looked at multiple ways to do this over my years on the council,” Councilor Nathan Dotson said. “It's always tough to give yourself a raise, and I'll reiterate what I said last time. This job has definitely become more time-consuming and a little bit more involved than it was when I first got on the council. I won't get this raise, but I do support the council and any new council members
