Federal transportation experts to assist in investigation of Old Town bridge collapse
The Maine Department of Transportation is bringing in federal researchers to help investigate what caused a bridge in Old Town to collapse while under construction. The bridge crossing the Stillwater River collapsed on Aug. 13 while crews were pouring concrete over the new deck, injuring several construction workers. The Maine DOT said in an update this week that staff from the Federal Highway Administration's Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center in Virginia will provide "expert assistance and independent analysis" during a forensic review of the span of the bridge that failed.
