AUGUSTA (WJBF) – It’s been three months since Augusta commissioners accepted the resignation of Parks and Recreation Director Maurice McDowell, but city leaders have slowed the search to find a replacement.

“I think we have plenty of time let’s get it right, so I fully want to wait,” said Commissioner Sean Frantom.

So do other commissioners; voting to hold off on the search to conduct a workshop on the hiring process…and allow for an audit of the department before a new director is hired.

“The audit still is going to take place, so it’s just going to help us in the future and that particular person who will be assuming that position,” said Commissioner Tony Lewis.

“We just want to make sure we get everything and the house in order before we hire someone. I would hate to hire someone and make a bunch of changes from what they anticipate from a job description standpoint,” said Frantom.

But some commissioners don’t believe the candidate search needs to wait for an audit, and work session.

“I asked the question of Ms. Williams, does hiring someone to work as the administrator over there impede the auditing process? She said no,” said Commissioner Bobby Williams.

“We do a lot of work sessions. I don’t think we need a work session to go in that arena,” said Lewis

Finding an auditor is moving forward. Requests for proposals ended Tuesday. Those bids will be evaluated, and a recommendation will be presented to commissioners.

Then the city will hear if any games were being played with the Parks budget.
