Augusta Fire Department officials said those noticing thick smoke across the Augusta area should not be concerned.

The smoke was caused by a controlled burn on the southern portion of Fort Eisenhower, according to the installation's Facebook page.

Smoke from the burn is forecasted to travel southwest.

"Area residents and travelers may see or smell smoke in the air during the burn," according to the installation.
