HAMILTON COUNTY, Ind. — Recently released bodycam footage shows Hamilton County Sheriff’s Deputies rescuing a driver after their car flipped into water after crashing into a culvert.

The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office responded on April 30 to the intersection of 296th Street and Carpenter Road in Atlanta, Indiana, for an inverted car stuck in a culvert filled with water.

Upon arrival, responding deputies found that the car was fully submerged in water and that the driver was stuck inside. Multiple first-response agencies began rescue attempts.

Since the driver was still inside the car and the windows were underwater, several deputies and a DNR Conservation Officer had to go underwater and use tools to break the window and remove them. HCSO said the men did this “without regard for their personal safety.”

“Through teamwork and quick brainstorming, a winch from a responding fire apparatus was used to angle the vehicle upward so a window was out of the water, enabling a window to be broken to gain access the driver,” HCSO said in a release Wednesday.

The driver was eventually removed from the car and pulled to the bank of the ditch where EMS gave them medical attention. They were eventually taken to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis for further treatment for chest pain.

“Without these measures taken by the first responders, the outcome for the victim could have been much worse and likely have resulted in a drowning,” HCSO said.
