PARK FALLS — It was a heartbreaking night for the never-say-quit Chequamegon High School girls softball team at home on April 30. The Screaming Eagles rallied at least four times during a seven inning game to stay with the visiting first place Athens but the Blue Jays scored big in the late innings to win 17-11.

It was a game with several home runs to open leads or close them. But in the top of the seventh inning with the score 12-11 Athens senior outfielder Jenna Handschke hit a grand slam to break the game open 16-11. The next batter added a solo homer to make the game 17-11 and the Eagles went down in order in the bottom of the frame.

Anya Brenholt pitched the game for the Eagles. Addison Lavicka pitched for the Blue Jays.

Chequamegon will get a chance to even the series when they travel to Athens on May 2. The team then heads to Stratford for a non-conference game on May 3.
