Editor’s Note: The Athens Messenger partnered with OhioHealth Race for a Reason organizers to promote the many charities this event benefits through participants’ donations. Returning this year is the “Racing With the Athens Stars” initiative, which featured “local celebrities” and their Reasons for participating. This is the sixth and last in a series of articles featuring community members who plan to participate in the race. The 2024 OhioHealth Race for a Reason is set for Friday and Saturday.

The events are scheduled at Ohio University and are hosted by AECOM Ohio University Center for Sports Administration and Ohio University’s Valor military ministry.

Athens resident Brian Scharfenberg will participate in the 3K walk on Saturday.

How long have you been participating in Race for a Reason? This is my second year.

If you have participated before, what’s your favorite thing about the race? I love that my whole family can do the walk together. Also, you can speed walk, or funny walk, walk backwards; I like options.

How did you become involved? I was invited by some of my colleagues to walk last year and had a great time.

What is your reason? How can people donate? My reason is the Athens County Transportation Assistance Initiative of the Memorial Health Foundation. If you’d like to help support this initiative, please visit https://mhsystem.org/foundation to make a gift!

Why are you supporting that reason? Lack of transportation to and from a health care appointment shouldn’t prevent community members from getting the care they need. Let’s help people stay healthy.

Why should other people participate in Race for a Reason? I promise you will enjoy this scenic walk along the river with us. Bring your whole crew!
