Celebrate freedom at Juneteenth events across central Florida
Now a federal holiday, Juneteenth commemorates one of the first major emancipations of enslaved Americans on June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas. Why that date? It's almost impossible to pin down one official date. Erin Stewart Mauldin, a John Hope Franklin Professor of Southern History at USF St. Petersburg, tells us that “the end of the Civil War and the ending of slavery didn’t happen overnight and was a lot more like a jagged edge than a clean cut.”
More than 21 people hospitalized while attending Central Florida Rock the Country music festival
OCALA, Fla. - More than 21 people were hospitalized, and 350 others interacted with emergency services while attending the Rock the Country Festival in Ocala on Friday. The Marion County Sheriff's Office said fire crews treated many of the concert attendees for heat-related illnesses. They're urging attendees on Saturday to drink plenty of water and electrolytes to stay hydrated as temperatures continue to stagnate in the 90s in Central Florida.
