ASHLEY, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A fire above the American Legion in Ashley had people running out of the building.

The structure fire began on the second floor of a three-story building.

According to the Ashley Fire Chief, three people were in the upstairs apartments when the fire started and about half a dozen people were in the bar area of the American Legion.

Nobody was injured and multiple agencies from around the area responded to the fire which took about 5 minutes to put down.

“We were having a Memorial Day Parade meeting tonight and the girl that lives upstairs opened the door and she said it went ‘poof,’ and that’s next thing we know that place was on fire,” said American Legion manager Thomas McGovern.

No word yet on the cause of the fire.

According to the Fire Chief, there’s extensive water and smoke damage to the apartments upstairs and water damage to the American Legion Club.
