Copper Falls State Park invites nature advocates, partners, and volunteers to partake in the magic of the solar eclipse on April 8 from noon to 3 p.m. This event is part of a growing effort in the Northwoods to celebrate the beauty of celestial events including a focus on protecting the dark skies that draw people to view our night sky. From 12:30 – 1:30 p.m., participants can build their own pinhole projector box for safe eclipse viewing without special glasses. Bring your own rectangular box (the longer the better) for this event; cereal boxes or shoeboxes work well. Those that want to view the eclipse from the park location can do so using their pinhole box or use special eclipse glasses that will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

The solar eclipse (viewed from Mellen) begins at 12:54 p.m., reaching maximum at 2:07 p.m., and ends at 3:18 p.m. Although the Northwoods is not in the path of totality, with good weather conditions, this partial solar eclipse here will be a significant celestial event to witness. Meet at the historic picnic area pavilion. The next total solar eclipse won’t be seen from the U.S. until 2044. Preview the solar eclipse from the park location at: https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/in/@5262529?iso=20240408. Day passes and annual stickers are available at the park office; pet rules apply.

On Saturday, May 4, celebrate May flowers and lend a hand at Copper Falls State Park at the annual Earth Day cleanup. Join the fun at Work, Play, Earth Day to help kick off the visitor season, giving everyone a chance to do their part. Volunteers of all ages and abilities can help, assisting park staff with the task of their choice. Sign up to choose from light maintenance work such as painting, raking, windfall pickup, tree-planting or cleaning the historic structures at the park. Park admission is waived for all workers and everyone attending will receive a bare root native shrub of their choice to plant at home.

Volunteers are requested to meet at the historic picnic area pavilion at 9 a.m. to sign up for the activity of their choice rain or shine. Helpers are automatically entered to win a free overnight stay at AmericInn’s Splashland waterpark in Ashland. The day includes free lunch provided by the Friends of Copper Falls State Park followed by the drawing for the overnight Splashland stay. Those interested in helping should dress for weather and bring work gloves or an optional rake. No pets please.

After noon, check out the power and beauty of nature along the historic Doughboys’ Trail where the waterfalls along the Bad River and Tyler Forks inspire timeless memories. Alternatively, take in the peace and solitude along Loon Lake’s shores to view migrating waterfowl.
