Hurricane track teams win at Ashland

The Hayward Hurricanes track and field teams opened their 2024 season with a roar Tuesday March 18 as both the girls and boys squads took first place in the eight-school Ashland Large School Invitational at the Ashland Fieldhouse.

Hayward sophomore Lucas Hansen took four first places in the boys meet: 60-meter hurdles, 200-meter hurdles, as part of the 4 X 400-meter relay and in the long jump—where he cleared 20 feet.

In the girls meet, senior Avery Poppe took first in three events: the 400-meter dash, high jump and the long jump.
