VIRGINIA—The Rock Ridge girls’ golf team came away with a first place finish on Thursday, tying with Grand Rapids to win the Rock Ridge Invite at the Virginia Golf Course.

Both the Wolverines and the Thunderhawks tied with a final score of 353 and the two teams were declared co-champions on the day.

Rock Ridge head coach Kyle Lawrence said it was a solid showing for his squad and some of his players came out with good results in a bounceback effort from earlier in the week.

“We had some girls that were coming off rounds that they weren’t too happy with on their own so they came out today and really put their good foot forward and showed how to respond and put that behind them.

“We had some really nice rounds overall and Emma Berg, taking third individually, really helped out our team score. It was nice to see some of our girls step up as well since we were missing one girl [Madison Fingeroos] with the flu.”

International Falls’ Kelby Anderson took home individual medalist honors, winning the meet with a 71. North Woods’ Tori Olson was second at 79 with Berg finishing third (80).

Erin Hughes was next for Rock Ridge, taking fifth overall with an 85. Sydney Spelts finished in 10th place (93) and Mylee Young rounded out the team score in 12th with a 95.

Their second 18-hole meet of the week, Lawrence said he wasn’t sure how his team would come out after the challenges they faced on Monday at the Quarry. Thankfully, it seemed like his golfers came ready to play a full 18 holes.

“I thought they did a nice job. It’s tough to navigate a course like the Quarry on Monday and I wasn’t sure if they’d have their legs today but they showed up and were confident and positive. That showed on the course. Getting through two long meets like that really shows me that they put a lot into this week.”

Locally, Ely/Northeast Range finished in third with a team score of 388. Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin was fourth (444), Hibbing fifth (453) and Duluth East sixth. Along with North Woods and International Falls, Mesabi East and Stella Maris Academy were also in attendance.

Maizy Sundblad led E/NR in a tie for eighth place (92). Carena DeBeltz was 11th (94), Danica Sundblad 15th (99) and Abby Koivisto 17th (103).

Reagan Powell led the Titans, also in 17th while Klara Finke was 25th (110), Ava Gangl was 27th (112) and Veronica Gangl was 31st (119).

Ava Sandnas (105) and Heidi Rasch (107) paced the Bluejackets in 21st and 22nd, respectively. Opal Valeri was 29th (118) and Kenedi Koland was 32nd (123).

Mesabi East’s Allie Lamppa was 13th (97), North Woods’ Laurin Glass was 37th (128) and her teammate Carsyn Burnett was 38th (129).

With sections approaching at the end of the month, Lawrence said the Wolverines look to be trending in the right direction with their hopes of repeating as 7AA champs. The goal is to be in postseason form soon.

“We’ve had some ups and downs when it comes to our scores. Some girls are playing well and some I think are looking to play a little bit better but overall we’re trying to round out the team and get into playoff form soon. With a few more meets under our belt, I think we can be ready for sections at the end of the month.”
