Governors Head to Brookings for ESD
The Pierre Governor golf team will begin its postseason today as the Govs head to the ESD Invite at the Brookings Country Club. For the Governors, they did not get to play at the Brookings Country Club, even though they were scheduled to play there during the season. Two weeks ago on September 14, the Govs were scheduled to start a busy week in Brookings, but the rains coming through over the weekend and the weather for the day didn’t look promising and the invite would be canceled. Now, Pierre will look for its best day to date to start the final two meets of the season with the state tournament looming next week Monday and Tuesday. The Govs have been close to having top five and even top three team finishes, and against other ESD teams as Pierre can be in the thick of things for the day.

More history, more hustle: Sioux Falls storytellers plan 2nd anthology
In the 1930s, Lt. Col. Parker Newcomb and his dear wife, Myrtle, ran a cold storage fur vault in the basement of the Frye Building in what was then known as the Ballard Block in downtown Sioux Falls. Upstairs was a back room used to process, to repair and to store furs for posh local families. They ran the shop for nearly 40 years. Today, a family legacy endures in the same building after Stacy Newcomb-Weiland, the granddaughter of Parker and Myrtle, opened the namesake high-end restaurant, Parker’s Bistro, in 2009 then Myrtle’s Fur Vault and Bar , with a hidden speakeasy replacing the old vault, next door in 2023. A darling photo of the Newcombs – Myrtle looking chic in floor-length fur and Parker with his Sam Browne belt and swagger stick – hangs on a wall of original woodwork and exposed brick while a mixologist with a Clark Gable-like mustache extends a brandy snifter across the bar with a smile. Related: See who will speak at the South Dakota Festival of Books in October. On the evening of Tuesday, Sept. 22, writers, teachers, students and residents from our Queen Bee City gathered in the same basement where the
