It’s not often that two reigning state champions go head-to-head.
But that was exactly the case Monday night at Halliwell Park.
Reigning Class 4A state champion Pocatello got bragging rights with a 6-1 win over defending Class 3A state champion Marsh Valley.
Martin Serrano chalked up three hits, including two doubles, and three RBIs for the Thunder (14-10 overall, 5-1 4A South East Idaho Conference) in the win. Kache Stucki added two hits, including a double.
Garett Keller picked up the win on the hill with a two-hit, 12-strikeout performance.
Tate Whitworth and Chandler Bennett had the only two hits for the Eagles (15-6, 3-0 3A South East Idaho Conference) in the loss.
SNAKE RIVER 15, MALAD 6Levi Gillins and Dallin Polais logged three hits apiece, as the Panthers (8-8, 2-1 3A South East Idaho Conference) picked up a nonconference win Monday.
Gillins also drove in three runs.
Dante Santillan and Ridj Allen each had two RBIs. Santillan also earned the win on the bump by allowing just three hits and fanning seven batters.
Easton Green notched one hit and an RBI for the Dragons (11-8, 3-0 2A South East Idaho Conference) in the loss.
HIGHLAND WINS CONFERENCE TITLE WITH SWEEP OF THUNDER RIDGE
Taylor Stringfellow totaled four hits, including a home run, and seven RBIs, as the Rams (18-6, 12-0 5A District V-VI Conference) claimed the regular season conference title with a 14-4, 10-0 sweep over Thunder Ridge Saturday.
Stringfellow also earned the win on the mound in the nightcap by allowing no hits and fanning six batters in four innings of work.
Hudson John and Mason Payne both added three hits apiece. John also drove in three runs for Highland, which has now won its last 12 games.
BLACKFOOT 11, POCATELLO 0, 5 INNINGS
Dax Whitney threw a one-hitter with 15 strikeouts, as the Broncos (18-5, 13-2) dominated in a nonconference win Saturday.
The Oregon State signee also hit a three-run home run in the win.
Jace Cooper had two hits, while Cole Robinson and Peyton Taylor drove in two runs apiece.
Martin Serrano had the Thunder’s (13-10, 5-1) lone hit of the game.
CENTURY 10, SHELLEY 0
Elias Blackhawk tossed a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts, as the Diamondbacks (7-14, 2-4 4A South East Idaho Conference) cruised in nonconference play Saturday.
Blackhawk also tallied three hits, including a double, and two RBIs.
Ben Call drove in a pair of runs for Century, as well.
SOFTBALL
POCATELLO ROLLS JEROME IN DOUBLEHEADER
Taylor Bunderson combined for five hits, including a double, and five RBIs, as the Thunder (17-3, 5-0 4A South East Idaho Conference) rolled to a 12-1, 13-0 nonconference doubleheader sweep Monday.
Oakley Hirschi, Taylee Rogers and Miah Lusk all totaled four hits each. Lusk also threw a five-inning no-hitter with 10 strikeouts in the nightcap for Pocatello.
Kirstine Kent and Kate Jolley drove in three runs apiece.
MALAD 18, WEST SIDE 1, 5 INNINGS
Riglee Peterson gave up just two hits and racked up 13 strikeouts, as the Dragons (18-0-1, 4-0 2A South East Idaho Conference) ran their unbeaten streak to 50 games with a league win Monday.
Peterson had two hits and drove in a run in the win, too. Hallie Horsley also added two hits, including a home run, and a game-high four RBIs.
Hadley Ashby and Sydney Parkinson had the only two hits of the game for the Pirates (1-16, 0-4).
