Wayzata ‘Gladiators’ ready for homecoming
When Moorhead High football players came out for warm-ups Sept. 25 at Wayzata High Stadium, it didn’t take them long to spot the offensive and defensive linemen who lead the Trojans. Senior Benton Nordaune is easy to pick out in a crowd. At 6-3 and 325 pounds, he motivates his teammates on the offensive line. Just as impressive is the hard charger on the defensive line, senior defensive end Eli Diane, who stands 6-5 and weighs in at 275 pounds. Moorhead came to town ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 6A, and with good reason. The Spuds have the leading passer in Class 6A football, senior Jett Feeney, along with the No. 1 receiver in Class 6A, senior David Mack. So what were fans in the stands looking for? Simply stated, a battle between Wayzata’s Gladiators and Moorhead’s offensive Whiz Kids. At the end of the night, Moorhead was the winner 41-22, but it was far from an easy route to victory. Wayzata surprised the Spuds by scoring the first touchdown of the game with 1:46 remaining in the first quarter. Senior quarterback Thor Soukup scored on a 3-yard run and the extra point by Felipe Neves was

Wayzata passes road test on STMA’s field
There is excitement surrounding Wayzata High football this season with an offense that is averaging almost five touchdowns per game. The Trojans are 3-0 going into a Class 6A showdown against Moorhead (3-0) at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25, at Wayzata High Stadium. Moorhead is led by the state’s No. 1-rated passer, senior Jett Feeney, who led the Spuds to a 42-28 win over Minnetonka in Moorhead Sept. 18. Wayzata’s game on the 18th was a quality win, 28-20 at St. Michael-Albertville. The Trojans had a balanced offense in that game with senior Luke Boutwell scoring two rushing touchdowns and senior quarterback Thor Soukup throwing a pair of touchdown passes to junior wide receiver Weston Moeller. “St. Michael-Albertville is a good team,” Wayzata head coach Derrin Lamker. “They’re the kind of team nobody wants to face in the playoffs.” Early in the game at STMA, Wayzata’s star tailback, Michael Criswell, was injured and could not play the rest of the way. That left the rushing duties in Boutwell’s hands. “Our offensive line has carried us so far,” coach Lamker said. “Those guys are doing a great job. We had some success passing with Soukup throwing to Weston Moeller and Parker
