Out on a Quiet Stretch of Highway, This California Cafe Bakes Fresh Bear Claws Every Morning
Fog was still hanging over the cliffs when the smell of warm butter drifted across Highway 1 and pulled me off the road. I expected a quick coffee and a so-so muffin, the kind of snack you forget by the next turnout. Instead, I found a small California bakery where...

An exhibit of Rex Ray’s iconic work is a treat for Monterey County audiences.
Agata Popęda here. The Monterey Museum of Art often brings wonderful art from outside of the county to Monterey. But the exhibit I described in this week’s cover story in the Weekly, Rex Ray: We Are All Made of Light, is really a special treat. The little miracle of having it here, in Monterey, comes courtesy of independent curator, writer and Monterey resident Cydney Payton, who was the artist’s friend.

A plan to shuttle visitors to Point Lobos takes a step forward.
Erik Chalhoub here. I will admit that I haven’t been to Point Lobos State Natural Reserve since 2013, when I was excited to try out a new DSLR camera I had just purchased. Back then, there seemed to be some pockets of time where you could avoid the crowds and find a place to park that didn’t involve risking your life along Highway 1. Those days are mostly over, hence why I haven’t made an attempt to visit Point Lobos in 13 years.

Fright and joy in west Gilroy
Gilroy resident Luis Castilla is excited to share his custom, immersive, thematic Halloween display with his neighborhood and the community. Castilla, a 26-year-old film student at Gavilan College, has decorated the small front yard of his family home on Martiri Drive in west Gilroy every Halloween for the last seven years. The intricately designed display features elements from some of his favorite scary movies, carefully placed dynamic lighting, motion sensors and animatronics that guide visitors from the curb to his front door.

Show Review: Jerry Garcia Band – Santa Cruz, CA (02/02/82)
01 How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You) Originally posted on my Substack, where you’ll get even more info, posters, and music. The Midnight Cafe Review. After our last show in San Francisco on January 13, Jerry Garcia took a couple of weeks off from playing in front of a live audience, but did spend at least five days in the Grateful Dead’s studio working on what would ultimately be his last studio album as a solo artist, Run for the Roses. He’d spend the rest of February and March playing gigs with the Jerry Garcia band all over California (and one gig in Reno) before heading out on the Spring Tour with the Grateful Dead.
