House of Horrors returns for 17th season of scares in Abilene
As October arrives in the Big Country, screams once again echo through one of the city's longest-running haunted attractions as Abilene's House of Horrors welcomes guests for another season at Doc's Bar & Grill, 2042 Farm to Market Road 1750. Founded in 2009, this year marks the haunt's 17th scare season. What began as a small family affair in Baird has grown into a major Halloween attraction in Abilene. "With each year, we're growing as far as scare actors with new people coming through," said Carrie Carrillo, the original founder of the haunt. "It's grown a lot." According to Carrillo, the haunted house originally started as just a small family project in Baird as a unique way to celebrate the spooky season. "We wanted to do something as a family, and my kids were involved with it, and they loved scaring people," said Carrillo. "It just kind of blossomed from there." As time went on, the haunt gradually made its way closer to the Abilene area, and in 2022, Carrillo recruited longtime scare actor Abel Perez to help run the attraction. "I was all for it," said Perez. "It was just a good time, and I really enjoyed the Halloween

I tried Angry Cactus before it opened. Here's what I thought | Exclusive
The lighting is moody, and the interior lands somewhere between electric cowboy and midcentury desert chic. What immediately caught my eye were the massive Western art prints illuminated by neon blue lighting. It's bold, unique and perfectly captures the restaurant's one-of-a-kind vibe. I was one of the lucky people to secure a dinner reservation for one of the training nights at Abilene's soon-to-open Angry Cactus restaurant, and in true reporter fashion, I am here to tell you what I saw and tasted at this exciting restaurant preview. I had high hopes. I won't lie. I've never visited the original location in San Angelo, but all the Facebook buzz had me believing I was in for a flavorful experience. My husband and I secured a reservation for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 29, the first night of the restaurant's trial-run dinners. Upon entering, I expected good food, but what pleasantly surprised me was the decor. The vibrant interior transported me from Abilene into an electric desert oasis filled with statement artwork, cowhide sofas and abstract lighting fixtures. It's cool. It's hip. It comes across as trendy while also maintaining an original atmosphere that low-key reminds me of a downtown stockyard club.
