Anniston, AL  – The Anniston Museum and Gardens is gearing up to host a special Earth Day-themed event titled “Third Thursday: Plant a Tree.” Scheduled for Thursday, April 18th, at 4:00 pm, the event promises an enriching experience for attendees of all ages at the Longleaf Event Center.

This family-friendly program invites participants to roll up their sleeves and dive into the world of plant potting. Each attendee will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience potting a plant, guided by the expertise of guest presenter Jack Johnston, hailing from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Northeast Georgia.

Jack Johnston, a former resident of Anniston and a passionate advocate for plant ecology and botany, brings a wealth of knowledge to the event. Having studied plant propagation extensively during his college years in Birmingham, Johnston’s interests span from native plant propagation of woody and herbaceous plants to grafting heritage apples. Notably, his dedication is underscored by his successful maintenance of a magnolia collection comprising approximately 40 species and numerous hybrids. Additionally, Johnston’s small apple orchard yielded bushels of organically grown apples in 2023, showcasing his expertise in sustainable horticulture.

Participants can look forward to an informative session where Johnston will shed light on the featured plant species, sharing insights and anecdotes from his extensive experience. Moreover, the highlight of the event lies in the fact that each attendee will depart with a plant, courtesy of the program.

Due to the hands-on nature of the event and to ensure an optimal experience for all participants, April’s Third Thursday program is limited to 30 people. Therefore, pre-registration is strongly encouraged to secure a spot for individuals and their family members.

This Earth Day, seize the opportunity to connect with nature, learn from a seasoned expert, and contribute to the greenery of Anniston by joining the Third Thursday: Plant a Tree event at the Anniston Museum and Gardens.
