Montour County group joins Capitol rally for data center moratorium

Harrisburg, Pa. — The president of Concerned Citizens of Montour County was among the speakers at a state Capitol rally on Oct. 6, where organizers say more than 250 people from across Pa. called on Gov. Josh Shapiro and legislators to impose a moratorium on data center development. “All they have to fight with is money,” said Sam Burleigh, president and co-founder of the Montour County group. “We have collective voices, elective powers, constitutional laws, and home field advantage. Together we can beat them! Unite and fight!” Burleigh has also previously spoken at meetings focused on Muncy and Gregg townships' proposed data centers. The rally in the Capitol Rotunda was organized by the Better Path Coalition, No False Climate Solutions PA, and 30 partner organizations. Speakers addressed concerns including surveillance, affordability, impacts on health, the environment, and agriculture, threats from artificial intelligence to intellectual property, and the future being left to children. Speakers during the event criticized legislators for what participants described as “putting polluters before people via data center deals that were brokered outside of the public’s view.” The rally closed with speeches on what organizers called the state government’s failure to enforce Pa.’s Green Amendment, Article 1, Section

I-180 deck work in Loyalsock Township closes Broad Street ramp

Loyalsock Twp., Pa. — A deck preservation project continues on Interstate 180 in Loyalsock Township with westbound lane restrictions and a ramp closure set for Oct. 9-11 and the night of Oct. 14, PennDOT says. The contractor, J.D. Eckman Inc., will work on the westbound bridges, including concrete patching and placement of a new concrete wearing surface. Starting Friday, Oct. 9, crews will work in the westbound left (passing) and right (driving) lanes of the bridge over Loyalsock Creek. Work will take place during daytime and nighttime hours, from 7 p.m. Friday through 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, and again from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14. Drivers can expect alternating lane restrictions on the I-180 westbound bridge over Loyalsock Creek. The on-ramp to I-180 westbound from Broad Street (Route 2014) in Montoursville will be closed during work hours, with a detour using Broad Street to the East Third Street interchange with I-180. PennDOT urges drivers to remain alert, reduce speeds and use caution when traveling through the project area. J.D. Eckman is the prime contractor on the $1.327 million bridge preservation project, which places a new wearing surface on the eastbound and westbound bridges over Loyalsock Creek.

Williamsport, Pa. — With a statewide crackdown on skill game machines just days away, the head of the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce is warning of the fallout for local small businesses, nonprofit clubs, and a Muncy manufacturer that builds the machines. "The inability for Harrisburg to address this is shameful," Jason Fink, president and CEO of the chamber, said. A Lycoming County senator and three other lawmakers asked the state Supreme Court on Tuesday night to push the deadline back to February, but withdrew the request the next morning. Court ruling started the clock The deadline stems from a June ruling by the state's highest court. On June 15, the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania ruled that skill games, often found in taverns, restaurants, social clubs, mini-marts, gas stations, and other businesses, are "slot machines" as defined in the Gaming Act. The court stayed the ruling for 120 days to give the General Assembly time to pass a law addressing the estimated 70,000 skill games operating statewide. That window closes Oct. 13.
