The town that God built

Lock Haven, Pa. — Along Route 42 in Sullivan County, about halfway between Eagles Mere and Laporte, there’s one of those blue historic markers. It stands near a set of ruins, what remains of an old community. The spot has quite a fascinating history. It was once called Celestia. The story of Celestia begins with a man named William Miller, who made a prediction. You remember a few years ago, when a man named Harold Camping predicted the world was going to end? He said he’d done the math, based on the Bible, and the world was going to end on a certain date. (You’ll note we’re all still here.) This is not a new gig; William Miller beat him to it by a century and a half. In the 1840s, Miller predicted that the world was going to end on a specific date. He gathered a tribe full of followers, who believed this, as well. When it didn’t happen, he claimed to have made a mistake in his calculations, and predicted a new date. Expert challenges Gregg Township data center sound plan

Allenwood, Pa. — The third continuance of a township data center ordinance hearing in Union County focused on testimony from an acoustical expert witness for the township, and sharp cross-examination from the developer's attorney. Testimony centered on dueling interpretations of the township's noise ordinance and the sound measurements meant to determine whether PNK Group's proposed data center campus would comply. The Sept. 14 meeting at the Warrior Run Area Social Hall began at 5 p.m. with an audience of about 150 residents of Gregg Township and neighboring communities. Again, many attendees wore red to signal opposition to PNK Group's development. As people filed into the social hall, several carried anti-development yard signs, and homemade handheld signs expressing similar sentiments. Expert witness for township The township’s special counsel, Attorney Brett Flower , introduced acoustical expert witness John Michael Spencer . Special solicitor Richard Shoch moderated. Spencer testified for more than an hour on behalf of Gregg Township. Spencer, who holds a bachelor's degree in acoustics and music from the University of Hartford and a master's in acoustics from Penn State, told the board he has over 30 years' experience in acoustical consulting. Lycoming commissioners vote to move register and recorder's office after years-long dispute

Williamsport, Pa. — Lycoming County commissioners voted unanimously Thursday to relocate the county Register and Recorder's Office from the courthouse to the Third Street Plaza Building, capping a more than two-year conflict with the office's leader that ended in litigation. The vote came hours after Northumberland County Senior Judge Charles H. Saylor dismissed a motion by Register and Recorder David A. Huffman office to stay the action, filed at 8:45 a.m. the same day, according to commissioners. However, a request by Huffman for a preliminary injunction is still pending in courts, and would continue to prevent the move if granted. Huffman did not attend the commissioners' Sept. 10 meeting. Board Chairman Scott Metzger opened the meeting with an account of the dispute's history. Secretary Mark Mussina made the motion to approve the relocation, and Vice Chairman Marc Sortman seconded it. The board approved the measure before public comment and commissioners' remarks. Background According to Metzger, the push to relocate the office dates to April 2024, when the county began looking for ways to address a shortage of space at the 56-year-old courthouse, built in 1970.
