Family-Style Fried Chicken Keeps Coming To Your Table At This Old-School Missouri Supper Spot

The fried chicken shows up in a heavy cast iron skillet. Then the mashed potatoes and green beans keep coming, family style, for parties of three or more. And the warm cinnamon rolls? They land on the table without anyone ordering them. I love that dessert here is basically a...

Italian deli expands with 2nd Johnson County location. Here's a first look

La Fetta’s story started with the infatuation of one sandwich. When Adam Bracco and his wife, Kelly Bracco, devoured a sandwich named Sublime in Missoula, Montana, almost immediately the couple knew they had to find a way to bring this sandwich home — 1,500 miles away to Kansas City. That was in 2023. Bracco would somehow convince the owner of the Montana deli, Matt Benzel, to bring his roster of rock-n-roll sandwiches to the KC suburbs in 2025. A year later, Bracco would do it again, this time with a second location in Prairie Village. The second La Fetta Delicatessen , an Italian-inspired deli, quietly opened in the bustling Corinth Square shopping center in Prairie Village, conveniently where Bracco and his family live. It comes almost exactly a year after his first foray into the art of sandwich making — the first location in Overland Park opened in October 2025. “A little bit of crazy would be the best thing to say,” Bracco said when asked about why he opened a second location so soon after the success of his first La Fetta. But what actually happened was that brokers from AREA Real Estate Advisors approached Bracco to bring a

The Kansas Riverfront Trail That Comes Alive With Colorful Fall Foliage

Bikes ride clockwise, runners go counterclockwise, and a whole forest of cottonwoods hangs over both. That one-way loop runs close to 9 miles beside a big Kansas river. I like how simple the deal is. Volunteers groom the single-track dirt, and the trail stays open year-round. Deer often rustle in...

This Kansas Butcher Shop Has Ground Chuck That Stands Out From Supermarket Meat

A German family butcher shop in Kansas sells tacos on Saturdays, and a local magazine once ranked them among the city’s top four. That alone made me look twice. Then I learned the ground chuck gets praised for its rich, fatty flavor and melt-in-your-mouth texture. The same family has...

Kansas City's newest Asian store opens in longtime grocery spot

Thang Piang has built a loyal following at his international grocery store — Zoland Asian Market in Kansas City, Kansas, — for the past six years. He aims to please the community, providing whatever goods customers request from Thailand, China, Japan and beyond. One recurring petition from customers has been another, larger store. Like Piang does with product requests, he set to work ironing out the details to make their wishes come to fruition. Finally, after two years of searching for the perfect spot, Zoland has opened a second grocery store. It’s taken over a historic building, which has housed several other grocers, at 7613 NW Prairie View Road. “I had a few customers asking, ‘Hey, why don’t you open up in the Northland, there’s no Asian grocery store here,’” he said. “People drive all the way (there) from Kansas City every single day.” His new location boasts a sprawling 21,000 square feet of produce, meats, frozen food and dry goods. It’s an impressive upgrade, considering his KCK spot at 7925 State Ave. is around 3,200 square feet. Piang said Zoland’s first few days in the new store have been sufficiently busy. While he’s waiting to fill some spaces with

KC deli, barbecue spot closes. Owner says ‘terrible' parking contributed

After a year in an iconic River Market space, a Kansas City deli and barbecue restaurant has decided to pack up. Car No. 551 — located in a 1940s streetcar dubbed “ Trolley Tom ” — served its last pulled pork sandwich at 426 Delaware St. on Sunday. There are a few things that contributed to the closure, owner William Jordan told The Star in an interview Tuesday. Business hasn’t been what he hoped. Foot traffic dipped during the World Cup and has only recently rebounded for him, he said. But a lack of accessible parking spaces was a notable hurdle, he said. “Parking is terrible,” Jordan told The Star. “The contract company that’s doing all the parking control for the city is overreaching.” “As soon as people park, they write tickets.” Sue Patterson, a spokeswoman with the City Market, sent a written statement in response to The Star’s questions about area parking. “We’re always sorry to see a neighborhood business close, and we wish Mr. Jordan well in his future endeavors,” Patterson wrote in part. “City Market offers free two-hour parking in City Market square (on Walnut Street between 3rd and 5th Streets) on weekdays year-round and on weekends

Chubby Smith Guitar Collection Goes on Sale Saturday at Lawrence Arts Center

LAWRENCE, Kan. (KPR) — Jeff "Chubby" Smith was a longtime recording engineer and producer at Kansas Public Radio and the Kansas Audio-Reader Network. He died in May of this year. While he was born Jeffrey Eugene Smith in 1966, few of his friends or co-workers ever called him that. They simply called him Chuck, Chub, Chubby, Ascencion or Chubias. (He never could decide on a single first name.) He produced KPR's Opera is My Hobby, with Dr. Jim Seaver. He recorded and produced the Ruel Joyce Recital Series and countless other live musical performances.
