Holton man's suit against detective could see trial delay
A court order entered last week said next month’s scheduled trial might need to be postponed until January in Holton auto body shop owner Rex Larrison's civil suit against Jackson County Sheriff's detective Philip G. McManigal. A deputy clerk of the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas entered the minute order Oct. 15 after U.S. District Judge Kathryn H. Vratil on Sept. 29 denied McManigal's request for summary judgment, in which he asked her to decide the case in his favor without a trial. McManigal appealed that denial. The appeal remains pending. The Oct. 15 minute order said a jury trial set for Nov. 9 in the federal courthouse in Topeka will proceed as planned unless McManigal's appeal remains pending. If the appeal remains pending Nov. 9, the court will reschedule the trial for 9 a.m. Jan. 4, 2027, in Topeka, the order said. One of Larrison's wives vanished while the other died violently Larrison's suit, filed in March 2025, alleges McManigal violated Larrison's Fourth Amendment rights while investigating the 2001 vanishing and the 2006 violent death of Larrison's Russian wives. Rex Larrison's suit alleges McManigal prepared an affidavit he used to obtain a warrant to search Rex

Veteran sues after jumping out of ambulance on highway near Topeka
A Missouri veteran is suing the federal government. Dana Summers on Oct. 7 filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The lawsuit Summers filed in the U.S. District Court of Kansas claims negligence for a medical transportation gone wrong. Why is a Missouri veteran suing U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs? On Sept. 3, 2025, Summers called 911 to take her to Dwight D. Eisenhower VA Medical Center in Leavenworth. She then was admitted to the center and nursing staff assessed her condition as psychosis. However after, Dr. Jon Jones assessed Summers as not actively in psychosis and said she was having a hypomanic bipolar episode. Jones considered her unstable and worked with Heather Aranda, an advanced practice registered nurse, at Colmery-O'Neil Veterans' Administration Medical Center in Topeka. Aranda agreed to accept Summers at the Topeka VA. Either Aranda or another staff member recommended that Summers be fully sedated during the transfer, according to the lawsuit. However, either Jones or another Leavenworth staff member decided Summers didn't need to be sedated. Jones determined the transfer process would be a "car with attendant,” and the suit said he requested an attendant, IVs, capped IVs, monitors, restraints, ventilator, suctioning, oxygen
